Teacher Prep
|
Susan, I agree that there could (and should) be more impact on teacher prep programs. Nonetheless, I think there's great potential here. At my university, for example, we introduce every pre-service teacher to inquiry-based science units (like FOSS) through sessions taught by staff from our LSC. Also, the ten districts closest to our university (spanning over 10,000 square miles) are involved in our LSC, so when preservice teachers have field experiences, they're virtually guaranteed to be in project schools. Finally, the impact on our science faculty (as opposed to science ed faculty) is beneficial to the pre-service teachers (as well as other undergrads) in that it affects the way they teach their content courses. These are slow changes, but I'll reiterate, they don't really cost much to continue beyond the funding of the LSC.
