subject: Integrating Science and Writing
The TAPESTRIES support teachers have developed mini in-services,
presented at after-school teacher meetings, sharing ideas on how to
incorporate expository writing in science. With the use of graphic
organizers, we developed writing activities for each kit. The students
are given the strategies needed to put their understanding of the
concepts in their own words. We stress this can be used as the closure
of a lesson, referring back to the explanation of the concept, or as an
extension or even an evaluation. The writing now becomes the tangible
article that can be sent home to parents who wonder why their child
does not have a science text. This has been well received in the
buildings and the teachers can now set aside more time for science, and
it is integrated with the language arts program.
