subject: Using student work as an entry point
As a coach/mentor, I find it easier when the teacher and I focus on the
student work and discuss the misconceptions, common mistakes, or
thinking about students' strategies or thought process on the problem.
I sit with students and listen to what they say and argue, and take
notes on their conversations. During the post conference with the
teacher, I may choose to begin with the student work and discuss what I
observed and heard. In this way, this takes the teachers away from the
spotlight and put them more at ease. It also sets the tone that the
work that we are doing is improving mathematics education, not
evaluating the teachers.
