5-E Lesson Plan
|
We use a lesson plan format that consists of the following parts:
Engage: where the teacher taps prior knowledge, focuses the learner’s thinking, and sparks interest in the topic.
Explore: the learners are provided common, concrete, tactile experiences with skills and concepts (the investigative portion of the lesson)
Explain: the learners present and share explanations and hypotheses and the teacher clarifies, redirects, and corrects misconceptions
Extend or Elaborate: apply the same concepts and skills in a new context resulting in deeper understanding; integrate with other subjects
Evaluate: the assessment piece, either formal or informal, noting the progress the learners have toward achieving the learner outcomes.
We emphasize all parts of the lesson must be implemented, although not necessarily on the same day. A critical part of the lesson plan is to have guiding questions, including questions that develop critical thinking (higher up on Bloom’s scale).
