subject: Inquiry Institute
Cheryl our Institute for Inquiry is not mandated by our districts it is
a professional development opportunity that we provide for our
teachers. It is held three times during the school year (Fall, Winter
& Spring) The institute lasts for 5 days and is held during the school
day. We run the first 4 sessions two weeks apart and the the 5th
session is usually 6 weeks later. This gives the teachers time to go
back to their classrooms and do some inquiry teaching with their
students and then report back to the group with a presentation.
We also have at least one insitute in the summer.
Our institute design is very similar to what they do at the
Exploratorium in San Fransisco. Several of us attended the PD session
on Inquiry at the Exploratorium and we use their model. The teachers
are given the tools needed to understand inquiry teaching and then they
have their own personal experience with inquiry. It has been very
successful and it is one of our most popular PD sessions.
