subject: Lesson Study
My district is also doing lesson study. I agree that time and
money are the two biggest problems. Once you are able to free teachers
for lesson study, other things seem to be easier. We started lesson
study two years ago and learned that we may be able to shorten the time
and save some money . Instead of having the whole group to plan the
original lesson, choose three to four people to plan and invite the
rest of the group to observe and debrief afterward. You can do it in
one day.
Another option is to have small groups which work much better. I
did a lesson study for over 20 observers. I made me and my students
very nervous. The conversation was not as fruitful. We learned from
the experience that we divided the big group into small subgroups of 5
to 7. The group planned, observed and debriefed the lessons. The
conversation was much constructive and focused. The participants
including the teacher who taught the lesson were much more relaxed.
