subject: Meeting the needs for professional development
We have found that a large offering of professional development
opportunities is one of the best ways to meet teachers needs. Like
you, we have a full calendar from institutes offered in the summer
catered to specific groups, to continuous workshops, seminars, and
content rich weekend university programs. We provide for literacy
connections as well as EL strategies in the delivery of science. We
also provide trainings on the implementation of instructional materials
and how to deliver standards based instruction. We do grade level
specific trainings as well as K-2, 3-5, 6, and 7-8. Our High Schools
meet to share inquiry labs and content specific ideas. New teachers
are definitely encourage to attend any of our offerings or those
designed specifically for them. As you can see, trying to meet as many
our teachers needs can be overwhelming. Our challenge is having to
conduct our professional development outside of the school day. Some
of our sessions are well attended, others are not.
