subject: Levels of Learning
Our group has grappled with the issue of providing professional
development for various teacher needs. Due to turnover we know that we
need to continually provide programs for new teachers. But what about
the others? One interesting learning is that teachers seem to
self-select programs that fit providing there are a variety from which
to choose. For example, some teachers prefer the summer institute
learning venue and have signed up every year taking a new topic each
time. Others prefer the building of collegial relationships in ongoing
study groups that meet monthly throughout the year to focus in-depth on
science notebooks or Case discussions. For them, the reflective style
learning that emerges from collegial discourse is important. Still
others benefit from co-teaching with a science resource teacher to
increase the amount of inquiry in science lessons. As educators we work
hard to differentiate for student learning needs. When we can provide
for differing teacher needs we make learning more powerful, more user
friendly for them as well.
