subject: Teacher evaluation vs observation
Principals are expected to evaluate teachers every other year. This
evaluation is to measure teacher performance. Teachers don't have a
choice in this process. As part of our USP some teachers are randomly
selected to be observed using the Horizon instrument. This is not to
evaluate teachers but to look at the delivery of instruction; the
purpose, desing, implementation of instructional materials and so
forth. Most teachers are receptive and willing to be observed, again
with the understanding that it is not an evaluation. There seems to be
a comfort level on the part of the teacher when our department assists
with the observations since we have had some kind of contact with them
through one of our professional development offerings. Having an on
going connection allows for doors to be open.
