Yes, smaller groups are definitely better for lesson study. We started out without the planning piece but felt that something was missing. It almost seems like the planning is one of the most revealing parts of the process, especially if it is a lesson that all the teachers in the group teach. Teachers usually get an aha here. We came up with a template for the planning,note-taking during the observation, and reflection. One of the areas on the planning part of the template is to decide on a concept goal and a process goal. These are often difficult for teachers to pinpoint, but so important. The template uses our 4-part learning cycle as a frame and then we plan what the teacher will do in each part and what the students will be doing. The other parts of the template are used for the observation and reflection afterwards and includes: evidence that students are working toward the goals and formative assessment - implications for the next lesson.
It's a lot and that is why time is an issue. But I can't think of what we could delete without losing something important for teachers to internalize.
