Student definitions of even numbers
|
The first two descriptions/definitions make sense in the context of grouping or sharing. The third definition is problematic in that it assumes the first value on the number line is either 0 or an even number. I think that this student could be prodded to check his 'conjecture' to be sure it always works and if not to revise the 'conjecture' so that it does always work. This example as well as the previous ones speak to the importance of having students make conjectures, test them, and revise them as they work to make sense of the mathematics.
