"Exploring the Effects of High Stake Tests on Teacher Leaders and
Teachers"
|
In our district during the last three years, high stakes testing has had a great impact on how much science is being taught in the K-6 classroom. The Language Arts and mathematics scores from the state CAT 6 test are part of the Academic Performance Indicator which determines a schools overall performance. Low performing schools must show improvement on student achievement or face sanctions by the state. Because of this, teachers are having difficulty in finding time to teach science in a meaningful way where true hands-on and conceptual understanding is taking place. What role are teacher leaders taking in providing pedagogical strategies to their peers for the delivery of science instruction while meeting the demands of literacy and mathematics? How do they work with site administrators to give support to teachers? What support are teacher leaders given at the district level?
