subject: professional developers
I agree with your last series of questions about the role of
professional developers. You questioned how could a professional
developer develop her own knowledge of teaching when not in the
classroom. My response to new projects is this. Consider keeping your
teacher leaders in the classroom part of the day. They should have the
responsibility of regularly teaching students for the purpose of long
term growth. In my project, our teacher leaders are half time
teachers. Some job share a self contained classroom. Others teach
just two or three classes at the middle school level. This
configuaration has many benefits. I know exactly what challenges
teachers are facing, because I face them, too. The teachers see me as
credible for this. My classroom can serve as a model when needed.
Also, I am never at a loss for examples when having discussions with
teachers about "What would that look like in the classroom?"
