subject: Shared vision of teachers' role
what an interesting poster!
I got to thinking about the diagram showing a continuum of teacher
expertise. It reminded me of some research Joni Falk and I did with
teachers some years ago. The intervention we were studying seemed to
have its first impact on the teachers at the level of their definition
of their work-- what is a teacher? Many of them started seeing
"science learner" and even "scientist" as part of their professional
self-image, which then brought with it both the need to keep learning
outside the classroom, and also pushed them into some reflections upon
their teaching practice.
Can we help teachers (and the administrators who support them) to
develop together a sense of their profession that matches that
continuum you display-- that the right-hand end of the spectrum is
everybody's goal? I have known teachers who would not ever think that
way about themselves.
