The distinction between "adaptation" and "distortion" is one we face daily. An important factor is, of course, the teacher's content knowledge balanced with pedagogical knowledge. Less distortion is likely to take place if a teacher understands both the math and students' developing understanding (and misconceptions) about that math. This is often the main focus of coaching sessions - identifying the mathematics in a lesson, relating children's prior experiences to it and anticipating what children might do. Those changes to the curriculum are well thought out, professional decisions, and not arbritary ones.
