response to "big math ideas"
|
One of the ways in which we in CSD2 uncover big math ideas is to have teachers engage in adult mathematical problems or situations around a concept in the curriculum. By engaging them as learners and having them reflect on their own thinking and strategies, we can often list ideas or misconceptions we may find in our classrooms. We also use video clips of students working for the same purpose. After identifying these big ideas, we then look to see where in the curriculum - which particular activities - address a concept, skill or misconception. We have found doing this around a strand K-5 or K-8 has been very powerful as primary teachers realize what contributions they may be making to building foundations or misconceptions for children in middle school.
