SUSTAINABILITY in the SHIFTING SANDS of TIME: Assessment in the Service of Standards-Based Teaching

 Science NY Elementary Middle School

Original Vision

The vision in our proposal was to provide all K-8 students in the CRSEP Districts with the opportunity to develop their understanding of science and the knowledge and skills required to meet the New York State Learning Standards for Science.

The strategy we proposed was to use assessment as vehicle, working with teachers to design formative assessments aligned with the Science and Technology for Children (STC) Units they were implementing and summative assessments (end-of-year) assessments aligned with STC and with the New York State Elementary Science Core Curriculum (ESCC) and the Intermediate Science Core Curriculum (ISCC). Our vision and proposed strategy were based on several assumptions including that:

  • STC units implemented in grades K-4 were aligned with the NYS ESCC
  • STC units implemented for grades 5-8 were aligned with the NYS ISCC
  • Teachers implementing the STC Units had adequate pedagogical content knowledge for a high level degree of implementation
  • Science is a component in the districts' curriculum on equal footing with other academic subjects
  • University and school science educators shared a common vision for high quality professional development
