Project Inquiry: Building a Presence for Science in the Lowcountry

 Science SC Elementary Middle School

Original Vision

Project Inquiry (2000-2005) provides over 1,100 teachers in 96 schools in Charleston and Berkeley County School Districts in South Carolina with professional development services. Using inquiry-based instructional materials, Project Inquiry's activities target grades 3-8 with professional development on science kits and notebooks, SC Science Curriculum Standards, science content, inquiry, assessment, and technology. This program also supports the development of teacher leaders while building administrative and community support. From the beginning Project Inquiry builds its vision on science literacy for all students using the NSRC model for systemic reform. ImageAi
As a result of Project Inquiry, both districts are significantly closer to full implementation of standards-based science teaching. Science Resource Centers (SRC) provide a systematic way to distribute hands-on science materials to all K-8 classrooms. Professional development is a key strategy to build capacity of the workforce. The Science Resource Teachers, master teachers, business partners, and higher education faculty play a role in supporting professional development with their expertise. The Inquiry-based curriculum materials, include: Full Option Science System, Insights, Science and Technology for Children, Delta Education, Science and Life Issues, and Science Education for Public Understanding Program that are consistent with the SC Science Curriculum Standards and Framework and the National Science Education Standards.

With Project Inquiry in place, schools have an opportunity to build a science program to ensure all students have a rigorous and relevant science curriculum, well-trained teachers, access to high quality instructional materials, and sustained professional development activities.
